Chapter 1: A New Purpose
High in the White Mountains, Rachael knelt among the crumbled remains of the great statue where an ancient being had been held captive. She knew nothing of this Ancient—at least no more than she had read in The Book of the Holy—and she had no idea what had happened in this place. She played with a piece of broken rock in her hand and wondered.
What happened here, Edgar? Speak to me, sweetie.
The snow fell softly, and Rachael closed her eyes. She reached out with her mind, just as she had been taught.
Edgar…Edgar, do you hear me?
She concentrated as hard as she could, trying to stretch her mind farther than she ever had.
But it was no use. If she was reaching him, he wasn’t answering. Rachael opened her eyes and shivered in the cold. It was time to resume tracking. She had made her way over most of Ephanlarea in search of Edgar, and had nothing to show for it except a chill. She stared into the infinite white sky and thought of how long it had been since she had last seen Edgar—ten years, possibly more? There were times when she wondered if she was merely tracking a ghost.
There has never been any reason to believe I will find him, Rachael thought. But I just can’t let it go. Joe always told me Edgar would leave some day. He wasn’t my boy…but he was, and he was all I had. I can’t explain it, but the minute he ran out that night, I knew, I just knew he was gone.
Over the years, Rachael had driven herself mad trying to find her lost boy. She became a nomad, regarded warily in each town she entered. Suspicious eyes followed her down every road, and whispers trailed in her wake. It made for a very hard life.
After so much time and failure she considered giving up, and ending herself. But then she met him, as if a prayer had been answered. He hardened her. He gave her a purpose. He taught her how to track, but more importantly, he told her about Edgar. Secrets. Dark secrets that only a mad person would have believed, but deep inside Rachael knew they were true. In her memories she could see it in Edgar’s eyes.
There was always something electric about him, Rachael thought. Something wild that seemed to be pulling away. But I don’t regret running after him. Not for a second. Especially knowing what I know now…We’re such different people now.
I don’t know if I’ll ever find him again, but I have a purpose. He’s always been my purpose. Edgar, if you can hear me, baby, I’m coming for you.
